Pharmacy Education in the U.S. (Part 1)

Today I want to introduce you to the study of pharmacy in the U.S. Similar to a medical education, this major is very competitive. It includes prerequisite course requirements and a selective admissions process, but it is not like the system we have in Russia. In this post I would like to focus on general information regarding the degree, main requirements, admission process and brief guidance for high school students considering becoming a pharmacist.

About pharmacy
We all run to the drug store when we get sick. Pharmacists are professionals who meet our needs in that moment: they dispense prescriptions and educate us on how use them. They are equipped with knowledge on medication and know how different pills, tablets or the components they consist of affect our bodies. Our health and treatment success ultimately depends on their skills, accuracy, ethical principals, and ability to look at small details.

Degree offered
A PharmD (Doctor of Pharmacy, or Pharmacy Doctorate) is the only professional and educational degree in that field of study. It requires two years of undergraduate college study and four years of study at a school of pharmacy. The undergraduate courses required to get into a pharmacy program vary from school to school but almost certainly include biology, chemistry, physics, and calculus. Look at the program at Oregon State University  to get an idea of possible Pharm.D. program prerequisites. Be aware of the fact that not all U.S. schools accept international students for pharmacy programs! Check the website of your desired school for specific instructions and rules.

Preparing for the profession while in a high school
Start preparing for entering competitive pharmacy programs while in a high school. Take life science, math, language, and literature courses. Work on developing strong communication skills. Demonstrate the best academic performance, take part in extracurricular activities, get involved with volunteer work, prepare and take entrance exams (TOEFL and SAT) and get high scores. Programs are looking for well-rounded, active, mature candidates able to cope with intensive programs and participate in a rigorous academic curriculum. Admission requirements to pharmacy schools
Admission requirements vary from school to school but a typical checklist to pharmacy program may include:
•    Completed online application form (2/3 of schools participate in the Pharmacy College Application Service (PharmCAS);
•   College transcripts (with indication of minimum GPA);
•   PCAT - Pharmacy College Admissions Test;
•   Essay;
•   Letter(s) of Recommendation;
•   Interview;
•   Extracurricular Activities (pharmacy experience is not a requirement for admission, but it is strongly recommended).
American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) offers information on pharmacy schools list and specific schools’ requirements.

Other paths to the profession
In addition to the more traditional path to becoming a pharmacist described above, there are other paths to the profession you can take and other programs to be aware of:

•  0-6 degree programs  accept students directly from high schools, require them to take pre-pharmacy courses within 2 years and guarantee admission for a 4 year PhamD program upon successful completion of the 2 year pre-professional study.
•  Early admissions programs are very similar to 0-6 programs but accept college students as transfers.
•  Accelerated degree programs accept students who have completed college-level prerequisites for admission but offer a 3-year Pharm.D. degree.

Продолжая серию постов о возможностях получения образования в США по различным специальностям, я расскажу вам об изучении фармацевтики. Также как и изучение медицины, эта область имеет свою специфику, отличаясь при этом и от российской системы. Сегодня я уделю особое внимание общей информации о специализации, основных её требованиях, процессе подачи заявления и коротком руководстве для тех, кто хочет изучать фармацевтику.

О фармацевтике
Многие из нас, в случае болезни, сразу же бегут в аптеку. Фармацевт – это как раз тот человек, который может нам помочь в этот момент: выписать рецепт и объяснить, какое лекарство нам нужно. Фармацевт осведомлен о том, как различные медикаменты действуют на организм. Наше здоровье и лечение напрямую зависит от его опыта, точности его знаний и способности видеть мельчайшие детали.

Возможные дипломы
A PharmD (Doctor of Pharmacy, or Pharmacy Doctorate) – единственная возможная профессиональная степень в этой специальности. Для её получения потребуется проучиться 2 года на бакалавриате и еще 4 года в школе фармацевтики. Набор и количество бакалаврских курсов, необходимых для поступления на программу фармацевтики могут отличаться в зависимости от школы, но чаще всего они включают в себя биологию, химию, физику и математику. Вы можете посмотреть на программу Oregon State University, чтобы иметь представление о базовых требованиях. Обратите внимание, что не все университеты США принимают иностранных студентов по данной специализации.  Не забудьте проверить информацию о приеме иностранных учащихся  на сайтах выбранных вами колледжей и университетов.

Подготовка к профессии в средней школе
Следует начать подготовку уже в средней школе: пойти на курсы по естественным наукам, математике, языку и литературе; работать над развитием  навыков общения;  хорошо учиться в школе и отлично сдать экзамены (TOEFL, SAT / ACT). Колледжи ищут разносторонних, активных, ответственных кандидатов, готовых к интенсивному обучению.

Требования для поступления варьируются в зависимости от университета, поэтому стоит тщательно изучить информацию о каждом из выбранных вами учреждений.
Перечень требований может включать в себя:
•   Заполненная анкета  (2/3 школ участвуют в Pharmacy College Application Service (PharmCAS);
•   Транскрипы (списки предметов или курсов);
•   Результаты теста PCAT - Pharmacy College Admissions Test;
•   Эссе;
•   Рекомендательные письма;
•   Интервью;

Другие возможности для получения профессии
Кроме традиционного способа, описанного выше (2 года предподготовки и 4 года обучения), есть и другие пути и программы:

•   0-6 degree programs - Программы, принимающие студентов после средней школы и гарантирующие их поступление на 4 годичную PhamD program в случае успешного окончания двухлетей предподготовки.
•   early admissions программа (программа раннего приёма)  похожая на 0-6 degree programs, но отличается тем, что на нее принимают студентов, переведенных их других университетов.
•   accelerated degree (ускоренная программа) принимает студентов, которые завершили двухлетнюю предподготовку и предлагающую трехлетнюю программу обучения.

Women’s Colleges in the U.S. (Cont.)

On the eve of International Women’s Day, I would like to promote women’s colleges in the U.S! Last year I submitted a post on this topic where I tried to demystify some concepts associated with women’s institutions of higher education among Russian students. In this post I would like to continue my demystification process by offering you more information, but this time focusing mostly on financial aid and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programs available at some U.S. women’s colleges. Here are several frequently asked questions and responses to them.

What amount of financial aid can I count on in women’s colleges?
The situation with financial aid varies from school to school, but in general, women’s colleges are generous in terms of financial aid available for international students. There are schools, like Wellesley College, MA, Bryn Mawr College, PA, and Mount Holyoke College, MA, that state their commitment to meet considerable, if not all of the demonstrated need. The competition for this financial aid is extremely tough, and the number of scholarships is limited! Other schools like, Scripps College, CA, St. Catherine University, MN, Simmons College, MA, and Mills College, CA, offer partial financial aid mostly in the form of merit-based scholarships ranging from $5,000 to $20,000 annually. Make sure you browse other schools’ sites, too, to learn about other grants and scholarships available for international students.

What should I do to increase my chances of getting financial aid?
Be aware that active community and extracurricular involvement, as well as, a strong academic performance are highly valued and taken into consideration for admission and receiving financial aid. Take part in extracurricular activities, get involved with volunteer work conducted available at your high school, other community organizations, or the Competitive College Club (CCC) in Russia. Demonstrate the best academic performance, prepare and take entrance exams (TOEFL, SAT/ACT) and get high scores. There are no certain scores that will guarantee you financial aid, but I would recommend that you have about 100 points in iBT TOEFL and 600-700 points in each section of the SAT. Look at the information about the Marvin B. Perry Presidential Scholarship available for international students at Agnes Scott, GA, to get an idea about the characteristics expected from potential applicants. In general, colleges are looking for well-rounded, active, mature candidates able to cope with intensive programs and participate in a rigorous academic curriculum.

Which documents should I submit to get financial aid?
You need to study the requirements very carefully of the institutions you are applying to in terms of forms and information you need to submit. A rule of thumb is that you need to indicate your intent to apply for financial aid on the application and submit a completed financial aid form at the time you apply for admission. Make sure that you meet the financial aid deadline. Many colleges and universities that offer need-based or merit-based financial aid will accept the CSS Profile or the International Student Financial Aid Application (ISFAA) - standard forms developed by the College Board. If this is the case, there will be a link to those forms on the university’s website. There is also a group of universities, which have their own forms you will need to fill in. You will find these forms and instructions on filling them on the websites of these universities.

Can I count on any support or financial aid if I am interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)?
Colleges typically do not specify majors when distributing financial aid. Those seeking financial aid should check if STEM fields are offered in that particular school and pay attention to the availability of funds for international students. Many women’s colleges do their best to provide additional support to such students by arranging early research programs on their campuses, external internships, individual mentoring, and summer programs. STRIDE (Student Research in Departments) programs provide hands-on research experience for engineering students at Smith College, for example. It is just one of many colleges with selected programs providing hands-on research experience to applicants interested in STEM.

Накануне Международного женского дня я бы хотела поддержать идею поступления в женские колледжи США! В прошлом году я выложила пост на эту тему, в котором я попыталась развеять мифы и некоторые предрассудки российских студентов, возникающие в основном потому, что до сих пор сохраняется консервативное общественное мнение о них. В этом посте я хотела бы продолжить знакомить вас с подобными учебными заведениями, рассказав на этот раз о финансовой помощи и программах в областях науки, технологии, инженерии и математики ( STEM:Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), предлагаемые во многих женских колледжах. Вот несколько часто задаваемых вопросов и ответов на них:

На какую финансовую помощь я могу рассчитывать в женском колледже?
Финансовая помощь варьирует в зависимости от учреждения, но в основном, женские колледжи славятся своей щедростью при предоставлении финансовой помощи иностранным студентам. Не существует определенного количества баллов, гарантирующих вам получение финансовой помощи, однако, желательно набрать около 100 баллов за экзамен TOEFL и 600-700 в каждой секции по SAT.
