Value of honors programs
Honors programs and honors colleges are designed to offer advanced, challenging, and high standard education for bright and academically strong students.

They provide supportive and intellectual environment that enables students to develop a deeper understanding of the material, further develop their abilities and talents, and meet their educational ambitions. Some of the features of the honors programs may include studying in small classes, having perks in class registration process, working with the best of the best faculty members, enjoying interactive, engaging, project-based learning style, special advising, curricular (honor’s courses) that meet students’ strength, focusing on discussion and critical thinking tasks in education process, and conducting in-depth research, etc. Offering special scholarships, events, extra-curriculum activities, career advising and even housing opportunities also may be a part of honors experience. Remember, the level and content of honors programs and colleges vary widely between the schools, so look at each school’s website for specific information about the programs.

Honors programs, colleges, institutes
Honors courses, programs and colleges are available for most majors in both private and public schools, and for both undergraduate and graduate levels.. With such a quantity and variety of academic entities bearing the label honor, it is difficult to mark a clear difference between all those notions. In general, honors colleges tend to be found at large universities while the honors programs are more common for mid-sized and small schools. The term honors institutes are usually associated with community colleges introducing this form of education in a more and more large scale in recent years. Check the website of each college or university for any specific information related to the issue. Admission and selection 
The application procedure to honors program or honors colleges varies from school to school but in general it is very competitive and primary based on great academic performance (i.e. GPA -3.8, top 10% in class rank) and high scores on entrance exams (ACT -32, TOEFL more than 100). There are many other additional factors, like outstanding talents, achievements, or aptitudes in a particular areas, strong commitment to community service, leadership, participation at extra-curricular activities, etc. that play a great role in candidates’ evaluation process. There is no separate application for honors programs at some schools while submission of additional documents, like essay, reference, portfolios, etc. are required at others. In the first case, all applicants are automatically evaluated for enrollment. Invitations to join honor’s programs are send to the best students with admission letters, although admissions are not guaranteed to everyone due to space limitations. Some schools accept freshman, others open this possibility only for those who successfully completed first term/semester or one year.

Students With Disabilities in the U.S.

Today we will talk about opportunities for international students with disabilities to study in the U.S. We chose this topic for our blog because we are celebrating 25 years of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) this year. Today, I will answer 7 of the most frequently asked questions.

Q.: Can international students with disabilities study in the United States?
A.: Yes, they can. American laws grant equal opportunity to study for everyone regardless of race, nationality, gender, physical or mental health. Established in 1995, ADA affirmed the rights of disabled people, including their right to study. This Act obligated all universities to provide equal access to education for all.

For example, here is the Nondiscrimination Statement from the University of California:
«The University of California, in accordance with applicable Federal and State Law and the University’s nondiscrimination policies, does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including sexual harassment), gender identity, pregnancy/childbirth and medical conditions related thereto, disability, age, medical condition (canсer-related), ancestry, marital status, citizenship, sexual orientation, or status as a Vietnam-era veteran or special disabled veteran. This nondiscrimination policy covers student admission, access, and treatment in University programs and activities».

Q.: How do I apply to a U.S.  university if I have a disability? Are there any specific forms?
A.: You may provide information about your disability to the university during the application process, although you are not required to disclose it.
The university you are applying to will usually recognizes that disability might affect your grades, and therefore your GPA. Although you are not required to reveal any information about your disability, medical, or psychological conditions, you may choose to mention it in your personal statement.

The university will hold all information regarding your personal circumstances, which you choose to disclose, in strict confidence. Nobody at the university will reveal your conditions to the third party without your consent.

Once admitted, if you need help with access to the education process and university facilities, special forms may be needed. Every university in the U.S. has special programs to provide appropriate assistance to students with disabilities. In addition, you will need to submit documentation of your conditions that may require special academic and other needs.

Q.: Are there any specific options for student with disabilities taking standardized tests (TOEFL, SAT, GRE etc.)?
A.: Yes, you can receive disability-related accommodation at the exams. First of all, you will need to visit Educational Testing Service (ETS) web site and read ETS' Information for Test Takers with Disabilities carefully. You need to contact ETS before registering for tests to request accommodations. These special accommodations could include extra testing time, extra breaks, enlarged text of the assignments, assistants etc.

Q.: Can I get assistance on campus?
A.: Yes. As I mentioned before, there are special programs for students with disabilities on every campus in the United States. After applying to the program, you will meet a disability specialist who will help you arrange the appropriate accommodations.
Every campus is accessible for people with any disability: ramps for those who use a wheelchair, signs written in Braille for people with vision problems, etc.

Q.: Can I get financial aid if I have a disability?
A.: Yes, you can. The nondiscrimination policies concern all sides of the application process and studying. Therefore, you have equal chances  to get financial aid as any other international student without disability.

Q.: What about housing for students with disabilities?
A.: As soon as you are enrolled in the university program for students with disabilities, the disability specialist will help you with special housing options. Most of campuses have residence halls with rooms modified for physically disabled, deaf, hard of hearing, and visually impaired students.

Q.: How can I move around if I have a disability?
A.: Most of campuses have transportation options available for people with disabilities. Ask your disability specialist about campus access map or campus access guide, there is usually such a resource on the university’s website. In this guide you will find tips for navigating the campus with a mobility or visual disability.

О: Да, можете. Антидискриминационная политика затрагивает все стороны процесса подачи документов в университет. Следовательно, у вас такие же шансы получить финансовую помощь, как и у любого другого иностранного студента.

В: А где живут студенты с ограниченным возможностями?
О: Как только вы вступите в университетскую программу для людей с ограниченным возможностями, специалист поможет вам со специальными условиями проживания. У большинства кампусов есть общежития со специально оборудованными комнатами для инвалидов, глухих, слабослышащих и плохо видящих студентов.

В: А как я буду перемещаться, если я человек с ограниченным возможностями?
