Success Stories: Feedback from 2016 Applicants Part 2 (Undergraduate Students)

Nothing inspires us as much as observing other people’s successes. Today, you will meet more positive examples of high school students who have utilized EducationUSA through different activities, like the Competitive College Club, 120 Credits Program and Opportunity Funding program. They have received acceptance to a variety of different schools in the U.S. and have agreed to share their success stories to give advice to prospective students.

Russian Student Named an Egleston Scholar by Columbia University

Mikhail Karasev, a high school student of the
University Lyceum 1511 was admitted to Northwestern, Vanderbilt, New York University, Tufts, and Columbia University - the dream schools of many people around the world. Most  of these institutions awarded generous financial packages covering his education costs in the U.S. At Columbia University, he was named an Egleston Scholar, giving him an opportunity to do a research in engineering during the school year and summer under the supervision of scholars and advisers.
The program even sponsored his trip to the U.S. to visit Columbia and see the campus and attend classes.  Michael accepted the invitation and enjoyed a four day trip, during which he met the faculty as well as other Eglesons Scholars from different countries. The trip helped him to make the decision to attend Columbia for his Bachelors in Sciences. Below you will find pictures of Michael in a classroom and on the stairs of Columbia University taken during his trip.  Also included is his feedback on the path he did towards his goal:
Believe in your dream! The higher you aim, the more obstacles, stresses and sleepless nights you’ll encounter on your way. However, if no matter what, you never give up and work as hard as you can, everything should work out alright! The last two years of my application process, though difficult and exhausting, were the most exciting two years of my life! Let the journey begin, embark on it, and do not forget to leave some time for rest (this one is also extremely essential). The best of luck!


Talented High School Student from St. Petersburg is Heading to Yale

Anastasia Posnova considered applying to colleges in the U.S. as a daunting prospect, but still decided to try her luck. She made her first "stop" on the way to her success at the St. Petersburg EducationUSA Advising Center, which she visited to gain more information about studying in America. Soon she became a member of the Competitive College Club (CCC) which exposed her into a variety of different activities: such as  workshops, book club discussions, lectures, etc, and helped her at each stage of the application process to U.S. schools. Anastasia took advantage of the Early Decision application option, having submitted her documents to Yale in November and received her accepted just before the New Year! Later on, she was also informed by the university that they had given her full funding to cover expenses to study there. Having determined her own future, she now comes to the Center to offer free prep sessions for the Reading sections of the SAT and ACT to other high school students dreaming about studying in the U.S. (Above is a picture of Anastasia assisting Irina, EducationUSA adviser during the fair held last fall).

Anastasia puts her own words about the application process she had gone through:
I spent copious amounts of time preparing for and taking tests, putting together a university list, writing essays, filling out different forms... I had expected the process to be difficult. I had expected it to be nerve-racking. However, I had never expected it to be this difficult at times. Failing practice tests made me disheartened, not being able to write an interesting and thoughtful essay made me angry. Of course, ultimately it all worked out. It was quite difficult to believe that it would, though, when I was once again getting a 28 on the ACT Reading practice test (I ultimately received a 36 on the actual thing). Or when I was going through the ninth draft of my Common App essay (I was only satisfied with the tenth version). Or when I came up with a fifth not very interesting topic for Yale's supplementary essay (it took me six rough drafts on different topics to find "the one"). However, I forgot all about these obstacles when in December I finally saw those much-coveted words: "Dear Anastasiia: Welcome to Yale College! It is with greatest pleasure that I write to congratulate you on your admission to the Class of 2020." Today I can only thank my 2014 self for making a choice to apply instead of thinking that getting accepted wasn’t something I  could feasibly do.

Student from Russia Makes her Choice in Favor of Women’s College 

Maria Lifshits will begin studying at Mount Holyoke this August, where she will have a chance to enjoy a wide spectrum of subjects, including her favorites: biology and chemistry.
Maria visited the EducationUSA Center last spring and signed up for the 120 Credits Program. She benefited from the Center’s activities by acquiring knowledge on application process and gaining the skills she needed to apply to U.S. schools on her own.  Maria displayed her open-mindedness and wisdom when working on her college list. She worked hard at considering different places for study and ultimately she came up with a diverse group of schools varying in admission requirements, location and types (co-ed and women’s colleges).  In March she got an acceptance letter from Mount Holyoke, a women’s college located in Massachusetts, famous for its strong programs in the sciences. The college gave her partial funding to assist her in covering the expenses on her U.S. education.
Let us hear what an advice she gives to prospective applicants: Do allow enough time to prepare application package in a proper way and write decent essays. Irrespective how well you speak English you will still have to spend plenty of time on learning new terms, expanding your vocabulary to pass exams with good results.

Российский Студент Стал Стипендиатом Egleston в Columbia University
Михаил Карасев, ученик старших классов Лицея 1511 был принят в Northwestern, Vanderbilt, New York University, Tufts, and Columbia University – университеты мечты людей со всего света. Большинство этих вузов предложили Михаилу щедрую финансовую поддержку, покрывающую стоимость обучения в США. В Columbia University он стал стипендиатом Egleston, что дает ему возможность в течение учебного года и летом проводить исследования по инженерии под руководством учащихся и преподавателей.

Талантливая Выпускница Школы из Санкт-Петербурга Отправляется в Yale
Анастасии Посновой поступление в университеты США казалось устрашающей перспективой, но она все же решила попытать удачу. Первой «остановкой» на пути к успеху стал Центр EducationUSA в Санкт-Петербурге, в которой она пришла, чтобы получить информацию об учебе в Америке. Вскоре она стала членом Competitive College Club (CCC), где принимала участие в различных мероприятиях: презентациях, литературном дискуссионном клубе, лекциях и т.п., и где нашла помощь на каждой стадии подготовки документов в вузы США. Анастасия воспользовалась возможностью опции ранней подачи заявлений, отправив документы в Yale в ноябре и получив приглашение от университета прямо перед Новым годом! Позднее ей сообщили о присвоении полного финансирования для покрытия расходов на обучение. Определившись со своим будущим, сейчас она приходит в Центр, чтобы проводить бесплатные подготовительные занятия к разделу чтения в тестах SAT и ACT для других учащихся, мечтающих учиться в США.

Анастасия своими словами описала процесс подачи заявлений, через который она прошла: Я провела огромное количество времени за подготовкой к тестам и их сдаче, составлением списка университетов, написанием эссе, заполнением разнообразных форм… Я ожидала, что этот процесс будет непростым. Я ожидала, что он будет действующим на нервы. Однако, я никак не ожидала, что периодически он будет настолько трудным. Неудачи на тренировочных тестах приводили меня в уныние, неспособность написать интересное и вдумчивое эссе заставляла меня злиться. Разумеется, в конечном счете все получилось. Хотя и было довольно сложно поверить, что это произойдет, после того, как я заработала 28 баллов за тренировочный тест по чтению ACT (в итоге я набрала 36 на настоящем экзамене). Или, когда писала свой девятый черновик эссе (меня устроила только десятая его версия). Или, когда на столе лежали пять не особо интересных тем для дополнительного эссе в Yale (пришлось сделать шесть набросков на различные темы, чтобы найти «тот единственный»). Тем не менее, я совершенно забыла обо всех препятствиях, когда в декабре я наконец прочла такие долгожданные строки: «Уважаемая Анастасия, добро пожаловать в Yale College! С радостью пишем Вам, чтобы поздравить с зачислением в класс-2020». Сегодня я могу лишь благодарить себя 2014 года за то, что выбрала поступление вместо размышлений о том, что зачисление в вуз США – это не то, с чем я могла бы справиться.

Студентка из России Сделала Выбирает Женский Колледж
Мария Лифшиц начнет свое обучение в Mount Holyoke в августе, где у нее будет возможность выбирать из широкого спектра предметов, включая ее любимые: биологию и химию.
Мария посетила Центр EducationUSA прошлой весной и записалась на программу 120 Credits. Благодаря Центру она получила знания о процессе подачи документов и получила навыки, необходимые для самостоятельного поступления в вузы США. Мария продемонстрировала свою открытость и мудрость при работе над списком университетов. Она усердно трудилась, рассматривая разные места для обучения и в конечном счете составила группу из разнообразных вузов, распределив их по требованиям к поступающим, расположению и типам (совместные и женские колледжи). В марте она получила письмо с подтверждением зачисления от Mount Holyoke, женского колледжа в Массачусетсе, знаменитого своими сильными программами по точным и естественным наукам. Вуз предоставил ей частичное финансирование, чтобы помочь в оплате расходов на образование в США.

Today you will hear from three high school students who have successfully completed the application process to the U.S. colleges and universities. Many have even managed to get partial or full funding to study in the U.S.

Young Talented Artist’s Works Have Conquered the Hearts of Admission Officers

Luibov “Luba” Lubvina will start her studies toward a Bachelor in Fine Arts with a minor in biology at Knox College, IL, in the fall of 2016. She worked hard, putting together her portfolio and her application package, took part in many activities offered by the Moscow EducationUSA Center for a year, completed the application process successfully, and was offered admission with substantial financial aid and scholarships from several U.S. colleges and universities and top programs in fine arts. 

These schools included Northeastern University, Knox College, Cornell College, Hope College, School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, and the Parsons New School of Design. She chose to apply Early Action during the application process, which allowed her enough time to prepare her application essays thoroughly and completely.

The secrets of her success were her talent, diligence, stellar time management skills, and a well thought-out, diverse college list, which included strong liberal arts schools and top-ranked art programs that were not well-known in Russia.

Luba tells in her own words why she chose Knox: Knox College perfectly suits me because it has a greenhouse, offered me a job, and all of the courses that I am interested in are available (the Japanese instruction is very strong). Currently, a new art building is under construction and it will be equipped with all modern technologies. Furthermore, the campus is in Galesburg, and I really enjoy its quaint atmosphere. It is also more affordable for me because of the awards I received.

U.S. School with Long Standing Traditions of Co-Op Education Opens Its Doors to Russian Student 

Maria Yesenina dropped into the Moscow EducationUSA Center two years ago with intention to get some basic information about U.S. education and getting financial aid. That day became a starting point of her journey to the world of essays writing, acquaintance with application process, making college lists, etc. Maria has become frequent user of the Center resources by reading books, attending lectures, seminars, consultations, Competitive College Club (CCC) sessions and assisting the staff with different projects.

She attended the EducationUSA fair and met with a representative from Drexel University, who talked about his school and  its Co-Op programs that help students acquire real world experience and identify career interest at early stage. He also mentioned the Global Scholarship available for international students. Maria was impressed with what she learned about the school. She especially liked the Co-Op programs. She believed Drexel University would be a perfect match for her and tried her luck by submitting applications for admission and the Global Scholarship, which is highly competitive.

What happened next? Let us hear from Maria herself: taking TOEFL, SAT's, writing essays, recommendation letters requests, filling out of different applications, answering dozens of questions, different documents submissions, interviews -- all of these things are flashing in front of my eyes very quickly. The longest and the most nervous part of the application process was waiting for replies from the universities and colleges to where I submitted my documents. Finally, I got an acceptance letter from Drexel University! I was not just accepted to that school, I was given full funding. I am very excited about studying in the U.S. I have begun to dream of how everything will be there at Drexel, my second home for at least next 4 years!

'Yay! Dreams come true!' - Two U.S. Universities Give Full Funding to High School Student from Yoshkar-Ola, Russia

Daria Bulatnikova, a high school student from Yoshkar-Ola was accepted simultaneously to two U.S. schools: the University of Florida and the University of Oklahoma with full funding.
Daria has always been drawn to learning. Her curiosity for international and simply ‘different’ educational, social, and cultural experiences formed her sustained desire to study abroad.
While at school, she was an active volunteer and happily exposed herself to all kinds of international communication, varying from Halloween celebrations to painting the walls of the international school with students from ten different countries. These events have not only shaped her personality and strengthened her understanding of community service, cultural identity and critical education, but have also influenced the society around her wherever she went.

Last year she began the application process to U.S. schools. She worked hard on her documents and studied very well at a high school, keeping her GPA at a high level. Facing some financial issues she did her best to reduce expenses related to application process and finally managed to avoid one major source of financial stress: she reached an agreement with Brown university, Tufts University, Gettysburg College, Brandeis University, the University of Florida, and the University of Oklahoma to waive her application fees. Some schools from her list also agreed to receive the ISFAA instead of the CSS Profile.
  

These are several words from Daria expressing her excitement: “Yay! Dreams come true!” was the first thought that ran though my head when I got accepted to universities in the U.S. It is an indescribable feeling of accomplishment, happiness and confusion about the fast-approaching unfamiliar, yet exciting, future. However, it does not come in one day: your key to a dream is an everyday effort to go beyond horizons, push your limits, strive for your own definition of perfection, and ACT. Action defines success and once you can dream and do - so much is open to you! Frankly speaking, it does not really matter where your life takes you as long as you continue embracing the entire universe with your Self-full of curiosity and desire to invest in what you love the most. I wish you all the best and make all your dreams come true, because "You can if you think you can," as Dr. Norman Vincent Peale once said.

Университет США с Традицией Обучения Co-Op Открывает Свои Двери Студентке из России
Мария Есенина пришла в московский Центр EducationUSA два года назад с целью получить базовую информацию об образовании в США и получении финансовой поддержки. Этот день стал отправной точкой ее путешествия в мир написания эссе, знакомства с процессом подачи заявлений, составления списка вузов и т.д. Мария стала постоянным посетителем Центра: читала пособия, посещала лекции, семинары, консультации, занятия в Competitive College Club (CCC) и помогала работникам Центра с различными проектами.
Однажды на выставке EducationUSA она встретилась с представителем Drexel University, который рассказал не только об университете, но и о программе Co-Op, помогающей студентам получить опыт работы одновременно с обучением и распознать интерес к карьере на ранней стадии. Он также упомянул о доступной для международных студентов стипендии Global Scholarship. Марию впечатлило то, что она узнала об этом университете и особенно о программе Co-Op. Она поняла, что Drexel University станет прекрасным вариантом для нее, и попытала удачи, отправив заявление в этот вуз и подав заявку на высоко конкурентную стипендию Global Scholarship.
Что же произошло дальше? Давайте узнаем это у Марии: «Сдача экзаменов TOEFL, SAT, написание эссе, запросы рекомендательных писем, заполнение различных заявлений, ответы на десятки вопросов, отправка документов, собеседования – сейчас все это кажется быстро промелькнувшими мгновениями. Самой долгой и нервной частью процесса подачи заявлений было ожидание ответов от университетов и колледжей, в которые я отправила документы. И наконец, я получила приглашение от Drexel University! Меня не просто приняли в этот вуз, но также предложили полное финансирование. Не могу дождаться начала обучения в США и уже начинаю мечтать, как все будет там, в Drexel, моем втором доме на следующие четыре года!»

«Да! Мечты Сбываются!» – Два Университета США Предложили Полное Финансирование Школьнице из Йошкар-Олы
Дарья Булатникова, абитуриентка из Йошкар-Олы, была принята с полным финансированием сразу в два университета США: University of Florida и University of Oklahoma.
Дарья всегда обожала учиться. Ее интерес к международному и просто «другому» образовательному, социальному и культурному опыту повлиял на ее твердое желание учиться за границей. Еще будучи школьницей, она охотно участвовала во всевозможных международных мероприятиях, начиная от празднования Хэллоуина, заканчивая покраской стен международной школы вместе со студентами из десяти различных стран. Это не только сформировало ее индивидуальность и углубило понимание общественной работы, культурной идентификации и критического обучения, но и влияло на общество вокруг нее, где бы она ни находилась.

В прошлом году Дарья начала процесс подачи заявлений в вузы США. Она много работала над своими документами и старательно училась в школе, поддерживая средний балл на высоком уровне. Из-за финансовых затруднений Дарья делала все возможное, чтобы сократить расходы при поступлении и в итоге избежала всех основных затрат; например, договорилась с Brown university, Tufts University, Gettysburg College, Brandeis University, University of Florida, and Oklahoma University об отмене вступительного взноса. Некоторые из вузов также согласились получить от нее ISFAA вместо CSS профиля. Она даже вела переговоры с колледжами об оплате ее теста SAT!

Дарья поделилась своей радостью с нами: «”Да! Мечты сбываются!” было моей первой мыслью после поступления в университет США. Это непередаваемое чувство завершения начатого, счастья и неопределенности приближающегося неизвестного, но многообещающего будущего. Однако, это не случается за один день: ключ к достижению мечты – ежедневные попытки выйти за грань привычного, преодолеть свои границы, бороться за свои убеждения. Действие ведет к успеху, и как только ты начинаешь мечтать и делать – столько нового открывается тебе! Честно говоря, неважно, где ты живешь, до тех пор, пока ты несешь в себе целую вселенную, полную интереса и желания вкладывать все силы в то, что ты больше всего любишь. Желаю вам всего самого лучшего и претворяйте свои желания в реальность, ведь “Ты сможешь, если думаешь, что сможешь” – как сказал однажды доктор Норман Винцент Пил.»
