This year I would like to devote a number of posts to different fields of study. Let us start with programs in architecture and briefly discuss its definition, listing some popular programs in that field, types of architectural degrees, main paths to the career of an architect and main admission requirements. I want to present the information I have on the topic in five questions and respond to them.
What is architecture as a field of study? What are the specializations in that field?
The first thing that comes to mind when you think of architecture as a major is a picture of an elegant old building or a complex of modern constructions that capture the imagination with its eccentricity (i.e. Dubai Rotating Tower ). Indeed the simplest definition we come across is that it is the art of designing and constructing buildings, but courses within an architecture degree can include architectural engineering, history, urban planning, landscape architecture, interior design, architecture of small forms, historic preservation, and environmental and sustainable design. Architecture is an interdisciplinary science, where art, engineering, history and nature converge.
What are main the degrees in architecture?
There are two main types of degrees in architecture at the undergraduate level and three the graduate:
• Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) - is a professional degree, which usually takes 5 years to complete. Applying for a professional degree at an undergraduate level is good for high school students who are sure of their career goals.
• Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies/Bachelor of Science in Architecture (BS Arch)/Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies (BA Arch) – are pre-professional undergraduate degrees usually lasting for 4 years and requiring further education at a graduate level.
• Master of Architecture (MArch) – is a professional graduate degree requiring from one to five years for completion depending on a student’s previous education.
• Master of Science in Architecture (MS Architecture) - is a post-professional graduate degree lasting for one or two years, designed for those interested in focusing on a particular aspect of the field.
• Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Doctorate in Architecture (DArch) - are the highest degrees in the field, designed for those interested in teaching and doing research.
What are the main steps to becoming an architect in the U.S?
There are four basic steps to becoming an architect:
• Getting a a degree that is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) in architecture on the undergraduate and/or graduate level;
• Getting an internship position or a job working for an architectural firm.
• Taking the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) exam
• Getting a license
What are the main admission requirements for international students?
Admission requirements vary from school to school, so carefully research the related information for each college or university you want to apply. A typical checklist may include:
• All official high school and/or college transcripts;
• Standardized Test Scores (SAT I or ACT to enter undergraduate programs and GRE to enter graduate programs, TOEFL – for all international students);
• College Essay;
• Letter(s) of Recommendation;
• Portfolio (required at a graduate level and required/not required or optional at undergraduate level).
Be aware that a strong background in calculus and physics is a likely prerequisite for some programs. Great artistic skills (drawing, painting, photography) will also increase your chances of being accepted to some architectural programs.

Однако, в реальности, направления по подготовке будущих специалистов в этой сфере не ограничиваются обучением архитектурной области и может включать в себя такие дисциплины, как строительная инженерия, история архитектуры, современное проектирование, ландшафтная архитектура, дизайн интерьера и многое другое. Таким образом, архитектура – это междисциплинарная наука, совмещающая в себе историю, искусство, природу и инженерные науки.
Дипломы какого вида получают выпускники данной специальности?
Существует пять основных типов дипломов в этой сфере:
