Preparing for Departure

All students who are planning to start studying in the US colleges and universities ask themselves an important question: what should we do before we leave? Today, I would like to introduce you to some tips on how to better prepare for departure, which I have heard from Andrey, a senior from the University of Evansville. Andrey shared his insight on this topic during the presentation at the pre-departure orientation program held at the American Center. Below are the six practical pieces of advice, he voiced to the leaving freshmen:

Practice English!
Even if your TOEFL score is above 100 and you are proudly saying that you speak fluent English, there is still a chance that you might experience some difficulties in communicating with your classmates during the first weeks in the U.S. Getting ready for and passing a 3-hour long English proficiency test is quite different from constantly having to speak the language. At some point you might find yourself frustrated by the fact that you have to speak in the foreign language all the time and feel a little less confident after being bombarded with dozens of slangs, acronyms, and abbreviations. Therefore, you should continue to improve your English while you are still in Russia; it will prevent stressful situations from occurring when you are in a new language environment. Read books, watch movies, take part in the discussion groups! Study materials related to idioms, humorous expressions, and slang used in academic sphere.

Put your thoughts in order. Reflect.
You might be excited about the upcoming departure while at the same time feeling nervous about the uncertainty ahead. You may even feel a little bit scared asking yourself a question, like “how will everything go there?” Be aware that it is quite natural that you feel anxious; your life is undergoing a dramatic change and your mind is responding to the new things that are coming into your life.
Pull yourself together, sit, and restate the goals you have set. You have come a long way to get into college; there is no reason to retreat. Be brave and go ahead!

Pack wisely
Do check the weather at the place you are going to live in. If you can, ask for an advice from the current students at your university on what type of clothes and other items to put in your bag. Wherever you are heading to the U.S., do not take too much clothes. Take several items for the first few months; you will probably end up buying new stuff in the U.S. anyway. Once you have time, be on the lookout for sales and special offers at the nearby  stores – remember that students might get extra discounts! Also, be aware that usually the graduating seniors leave various household items like TVs, fridges, chairs, or even hangers that you can grab for a very low price or sometimes even for free.
Do not forget to take the following important documents with you:
- Tickets & Passport (copy of passports and visa)
- l-20 or DS-2019
- Evidence of financial support
- Official transcripts
- International driver’s license
- Extra passport size pictures
- Contact information of people you know in the US
- Medical and dental records
Also, it is good to take a few photos of your friends and family and some nice gifts from Mother Russia!

Travel smart
Learn about your airline’s policies concerning flight registration, arrival time, the size and weight of luggage, etc. Label your luggage, inside and outside, with your name and the address of the place you are going to stay in. If you do not know your U.S. address yet, put the address of your school’s International Student Office.
Do not hesitate to contact your school to ask whether somebody can meet you at the airport upon the arrival.

Take all the important documents with you on the plane, do not put them in the bag you are going to check in. Unfortunately, there is always a chance your checked luggage can be lost, so prepare a small set of essential things to take in a carry on. If your luggage is lost, do not panic; talk to an airline representatives and fill in all the necessary forms. As a rule they will deliver it to the address, which you will provide, in one or two days.  

Do not try to get FRUITS or MEATS through the U.S. boarder, even if you are successful at getting them on a plane. For generally allowed food items please visit USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

Make sure to read your school’s information
Find out which office or person is responsible for international students at your school. In most colleges such structures are called the International Student Offices, or ISOs. Do not be hesitant to ask them any questions – they are there to help you. There might be many things that you want to discuss with them, but make sure you that have the information about the following four:

• Housing
• Course registration
• Your academic adviser
• Health insurance

All the items listed above are very important, but the last one is probably the most vital of them all, as the health care is crazy expensive in the U.S. Check for the possibilities offered by your school and never mess with questionable organizations lured by cheap insurance premiums.

Make financial arrangements 
Refer to the information about the costs of living and studying that you have received from your school. Discuss the budget with your parents: the ways of paying for college, the opening of a debit card, and any major personal expenses that you might incur. Be aware of how much money you should declare when crossing the RF border (at present sums over 10K should be declared).  Make sure to take 100/200 in small bills.

Все, кто готовится к поступлению в США задают себе один и тот же вопрос: «Что мне нужно сделать перед отъездом?». Сегодня я дам вам несколько советов о том, как лучше подготовиться к отправлению, которыми в свою очередь со мной поделился Андрей, студент последнего курса университета Эвансвилля. Он рассказал об этом на презентации в рамках по подготовке к отъезду, которая проводится в Американском центре. Ниже представлены шесть практических советов, адресованные будущим первокурсникам:

Практикуй английский!
Даже если твой балл по TOEFL выше ста, и ты с гордостью можешь сказать, что прекрасно владеешь английским, все равно остается вероятность того, что возникнут трудности в общении с будущими однокурсниками в течении первых нескольких недель в США. Подготовиться и сдать трехчасовой экзамен или постоянно говорить на языке – совершенно разные вещи. В какой-то степени ты можешь быть разочарован, после того, как поймешь, что придется постоянно говорить на иностранном языке и когда на тебя посыплются различные сленги, акронимы и аббревиатуры. Поэтому пока ты еще в России продолжай совершенствовать свой английский: это поможет избежать стрессовых ситуаций, которые могут возникнуть, когда окажешься в новой языковой среде. Читай книги, смотри фильмы, участвуй в групповых дискуссиях, и постарайся изучить материалы, связанные с идиомами, особенностями юмора и академическим сленгом.

Приведи мысли в порядок. Еще раз все обдумай
Ты можешь волноваться об отъезде и нервничать из-за неопределенности предстоящих событий. Скорее всего ты даже будешь напуган, постоянно задавая себе вопрос: «Как там все будет?» Будь уверен, это волнение вполне естественно: в твоей жизни наступают радикальные изменения, и это всего лишь ответ твоего сознания на них.
Возьми себя в руки, сядь и сформулируй свои цели. Ты прошел длинный путь для поступления в колледж и сейчас нет причин отступать. Будь смелым и иди вперед.

Собирайся в догогу с умом
Узнай все о погоде там, где ты собираешься жить. Если это возможно, спроси совет у нынешних студентов твоего университета о том, что взять с собой. Куда бы ты не направлялся, ты едешь в США, поэтому не бери много одежды. Возьми несколько вещей на первые несколько месяцев, все равно ты скорее всего начнешь вскоре все покупать в США. Когда найдешь время, поищи распродажи и специальные предложения в близлежащих магазинах. Помни, что студентам предоставляются дополнительные скидки! Также следует знать, что обычно выпускники оставляют свои вещи, такие как телевизоры, холодильники, кресла или даже вешалки, которые ты можешь купить по очень низкой цене или иногда взять даже бесплатно.

Не забудь взять с собой следующие важные документы:
- Билеты и паспорт (копию паспортов и визы
- l-20 или DS-2019
- Подтверждение о финансовой помощи
- Официальные транскрипты
- Международные права
- Дополнительные фотографии для паспорта
- Контакты ваших знакомых в США
- Медицинские и стоматологические записи
Возьми несколько фотографий твоих друзей и семьи, а также подарки из России-Матушки.

Путешествуй с умом 
Разузнай о политике твоей авиакомпании касательно регистрации на полет, времени прибытия, размера и веса багажа и так далее. Пометь свой багаж, внутри и снаружи, с названием и адресом того места где ты собираешься остановиться. Если ты еще не знаешь свой адрес, укажи адрес Международного Студенческого Офиса.
Не сомневайся, позвони в свою школу и попроси, чтобы тебя кто-нибудь встретил в аэропорту, когда ты прилетишь.
Возьми все важные документы с собой в самолет, не оставляй их в багажном отделении. К сожалению, всегда есть вероятность, что твой багаж потеряется, так что приготовь самые необходимые вещи и возьми их с собой.
Если твой багаж потерялся, не паникуй, обратись к представителю авиалинии и заполни все необходимые формы. Как правило они присылают багаж по адресу в течение одного-двух дней.
Не пытайся пронести ФРУКТЫ или МЯСО чрез границу Соединенных Штатов, даже если ты уверен, что ты можешь их перевезти. Посети министерство сельского хозяйства инспекционную службу по здоровью животных и растений в США.

Прочитай информацию о своей школе
Разузнай, кто ответственен за помощь иностранным студентам в твоем учебном заведении. В большинстве колледжей такое отделение называется Международный Студенческий Офис (International Student Offices, or ISOs). Не стесняйся задавать им вопросы, они работают как раз для того, чтобы помогать тебе. Скорее всего у тебя найдется много вопросов, которые ты захочешь обсудить с ними, но прежде убедись, что у тебя достаточно информации о следующих четырех вещах:

• Жилищные условия
• Регистрация на направление обучения
• Твой научный руководитель
• Медицинская страховка
Все вещи перечисленные выше очень важны, но последнее, наверно, самое необходимое из всех, потому что медицинское обслуживание в США очень дорогое. Разузнай все возможности, предоставляемые школой, и никогда не иди на поводу у сомнительных организаций, которые заманивают низкими ценами за медицинскую страховку.

Проведи финансовые расчеты
Обратись за информацией о стоимости проживания и учебы в твоей школе. Обсуди бюджет со своими родителями: способы оплаты за колледж, открытие дебетовой карты и другие личные расходы. Узнай какую сумму денег ты должен заявить, пересекая границу (сейчас необходимо заявить больше 10К). Возьми 100/200 долларов мелкими купюрами.
