You may encounter the term “Co-Op” (Cooperative) programs when surfing school websites trying to find the best fit. Offerings of such programs are always presented as an advantage in addition to other benefits of each school. Today, I would like to talk about the definition, types and advantages of Co-Op programs available at some U.S. colleges and universities. I hope this information will help you during the application process when making the final decision of where to apply.
About Co-Op education
A cooperative program is an educational method that combines academic study with work experience, concentrating on preparing students for careers in their specialties. It is based on a cooperative arrangement which takes place between a particular university and an employer to provide work experience for students. Co-Ops are available at graduate and undergraduate levels and in all academic disciplines, but not every U.S. school offers that particular model. The idea of creating the first example came from Herman Schneider, a professor of engineering at the University of Cincinnati who introduced the first Co-Op program back in 1905. Other pioneers in implementing Co-Op education among the schools were Northeastern University, MA (1909) and Kettering University (1921).
At present, Co-Op programs are offered by hundreds of schools. They continue to increase in popularity among the students due to a number of benefits they provide (i.e. trying real world experience, identifying career interest at early stage, acquiring more chances of getting better positions and higher salaries than peers from other institutions, etc,).
Differences between Co-Op and internship programs
When you search for Co-Op programs at different school websites, you will notice that sometimes Co-Ops can be found under or in the section called internship opportunities. Internships and Co-Ops have very much in common, as they, both provide students with real-world job experience during their study at U.S. schools. There are also some notable differences between them you need to know how to make your choice in favor of this or that model of practical learning. Below are two key distinguishing features I would like to share with you:
Money issue
Most Co-Ops imply salary payments while internships are more often unpaid. The pay rates for Co-Ops are higher in general when we compare them with paid internships. Co-ops earnings may reach up to $25 or higher per hour, so you have a chance to get enough money to cover at least some of your expenses related to college.
Program’s length and schedules
Co-ops are full-time positions. Internships can be full or part-time depending upon the career field. Students can co-op all year long and for up to six month periods. For example, students might take classes for one semester and then work for a company during another semester. This rotation can sometimes go on for more than one year and result in the extension of the bachelor program (5 years instead of typical 4 years). By contrast, internships usually last one term and mostly taking place in the summer.
Applying for Co-Op
Programs vary from university to university so make sure to carefully study all the materials regarding the coop in your respective school. Read the College Affordability Guide about types of Co-Op programs. Also check the websites of Drexel University, Elon University and University of Connecticut to get an idea of different co-ops syllabuses, timelines, eligibility requirements for international students and other facts related to the issue.
This model of learning is closely connected to your field of study, your
curriculum, and possibly to your future job, so you need to discuss your plans with at least two people: an educational adviser and a Co-Op counselor. Visit the International Students and Scholars Office to fully understand your eligibility to work in the US, learn about the companies your school has partnership, options the Center can offer you in terms of finding a good fit and completing the application process to co-ops. Remember that international students are eligible to work off campus in study related positions only with authorization from a Cooperative Education and the office of International Students. The rule of thumb is to stay in touch with your counselor during the whole period of your program to make the most of your work experience.

Длительность и расписание программы
Обычно Co-Op – это долговременная программа. Internship же может быть как долго-, так и краткосрочной. Участники программы Co-Op могут работать до 6-ти месяцев в год. То есть, например, студент может учиться на протяжении всего первого семестра, а затем работать в течение второго. Иногда такая практика ведет к увеличению времени, требуемого для того, чтобы получить степень бакалавра, магистра и т.д. Так, например, придется учиться не 4, а 5 лет для полноценного окончания бакалавриата. Для сравнения, Internship длится один семестр, чаще всего летом.

Программы отличаются друг от друга в зависимости от университета, в которых они предложены, поэтому данный процесс требует старательного изучения.
